FAQs
Transportation and delivery costs in the U.S. and in various other countries have risen significantly.
It has become difficult to secure profits needed to maintain the provision of Japan Post’s services under the current rates. Therefore, it has become necessary to revise international mail rates in order to cover increased costs.
The rates for EMS items and international parcels (airmail, SAL and surface mail) will be revised.
The reason is that the cost of delivery to the U.S. has been increasing at a faster pace compared with other countries. Therefore, the rates for items sent to the U.S. are separated from the current zone and are set for a new zone (Zone 4). U.S. overseas territories such as Guam and Saipan are also integrated into Zone 4 because their delivery charges are the same as those applied to the U.S.
Effective June 1, 2022, a tentative extra charge will also be added to international parcels (air mail only and limited to the Third and Fourth Zones) in addition to EMS to ensure space for loading mail on flights.
Apart from the present rates revision, it is possible that the tentative extra charge will be applied depending on the future reduction or resumption of airline route services due to the impact of the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic. An additional announcement will be made in that case.
The new rates are scheduled to be applied from Wednesday, June 1, 2022.
The last time the rates for EMS and surface parcels to some zones were revised was June 2016, so this the first revision in six years.
The last time the rates for other international parcels were revised was January 1994, which was 28 years ago.
